Tibetan Digital Library
In today’s digital age, digital libraries have become essential and highly sophisticated platforms for students, researchers, scholars and anyone engaged in the study to easily access relevant resource materials. Beyond providing convenient access to knowledge, digital libraries play a vital role in safeguarding cultural and historical heritage by preserving manuscripts, rare documents, and other valuable materials as secure archives for future generations.
Since the occupation of Tibet by The People's Republic of China's (PRC) in 1950, PRC has destroyed and is still destroying countless Tibetan culture and heritage manuscripts, artifacts, and vast array of intangible cultural heritage leading to irreparable losses to the Tibetan. Specially during the cultural revolution from 1966 to 1977, countless holy scripture and rare Buddhist text were burned, and ancient's artifacts and valuable items were looted and transported into China. However, after the escape of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to India, thousands of Tibetans followed with carrying important and rare manuscripts and artifacts which are now have been safely preserved in physical form in Tibetan monasteries and cultural institutions. Therefore, preserving such valuable cultural and Buddhist resources in digital form is crucial for both the Tibetan people and the world at large to ensure their long-term protection and accessibility to future generations.
The Dept. of Religion and Culture of Central Tibetan Administration developed the Tibetan Digital Library (TDL) with the technical support from Monlam Tech. The main goal of our TDL is to provide a user-friendly digital platform enhanced AI technologies that enable the Tibetans and Non-Tibetans users to access the digital resources while secure, sustainable and long-time preservation of ancient Tibetan manuscripts, artifacts and other intangible cultural resources.
Through this digital library platform, users can seamlessly access library resources from over 40 Tibetan monastic institutions and 5 cultural institution’s libraries resources in a single unified system. The TDL platform also offers powerful features such as an advanced search engine with a comprehensive book classification system, AI-powered tools for translation and summarization, and an Explore section that allows users to discover recently uploaded resources.
